Expanding Mandrel

Mandrels work by expanding within the bore of a workpiece, coming into contact with 95% of the holding surface and preventing distortion during the precision machining process. This product can be used to provide optimum grip and accuracy for heavy workpieces within machines. By tightening the screws, the workpiece can be clamped and prepared for machining, resulting in heavier cuts, a better surface finish, and closer tolerances. For the best economical solution, it is recommended that you have dedicated mandrels for repeat orders.

We provide a wide selection of Collet Style Expanding Mandrels, manufactured by industry leading partner Hardinge, offering solutions to difficult machining problems for turning, milling, grinding, assembly and automation applications. We guarantee exact workpiece lengths, even for particularly long parts, as our bespoke line of mandrels have extremely high stability.

Our site offers both ‘Spindle-Mount’ and ‘Collet-Style’ Expanding Collet Systems, alongside Center Arbors that can be paired with any machine or fixture that accepts 5C, 16C or 3J collets that use an existing spindle or adapter.  The ‘Spindle-Mount’ style works by being fixed directly to the spindle of the machine and requires no centering adjustment. ‘Collet-Style’ products are mounted directly into the collet angle of the spindle or collet adapter. Center Arbors are designed for use on grinding machines and lathes and is held between centers.

The key features of these designs are:

  • Parallel gripping with maximum torque
  • A built-in safety stop, eliminating the risk of over-expansion.
  • The ability to interchange collets.
